CrazyWise Conference – Rethinking madness

Crazywise is een seminar op 2 december 2014 in Rotterdam. Filosofen, psychiaters, psychologen en ervaringsdeskundigen brengen er een aanvullende kijk op psychose zoals deze vandaag wordt gedefinieerd en behandeld. Bijzondere aandacht gaat hierbij uit naar de idee van de zin in waanzin, van wijsheid in de gekte. Deze conferentie richt zich tot professionals in de zorg, patiënten, ex-patiënten en hun familieleden.
Decennia van medisch onderzoek naar psychose brachten een medicamenteuze behandeling die vandaag bij veel patiënten soelaas brengt. Voor een grote groep van patiënten blijkt deze remedie echter ontoereikend en een kleine minderheid van (ex-)patiënten lijkt erin te slagen stabiele en rijke levens te leiden, zonder de hulp van medicatie.
De psychotische ervaring en de psychiatrische praktijk roepen vragen op waarop de wetenschap het antwoord nog niet kent.
Crazywise biedt een forum aan sprekers uit Nederland, België, Duitsland en Brazilië uit diverse domeinen: van filosofie en psychologie, over internetactivisme en clowning tot psychiatrie. Ze exploreert nieuwe benaderingswijzen en alternatieve behandelingsmethodes en heeft als doel ideeën te leveren voor verder onderzoek en een effectievere praktijk. De conferentie situeert zich niet in de antipsychiatrie, maar biedt een platform voor wie met een open blik en in constructieve dialoog wil zoeken naar bijkomende verklaringen, nuanceringen en oplossingen.
Dit seminar is een initiatief van ervaringsdeskundigen en professionals binnen de zorg.
De naam werd ontleend aan een documentaire van Phil Borges over de benadering van psychoses in diverse traditionele culturen.

8:30 – 8:45: Griet Daemen – The case for a positive psychological approach of mental illness: A testimony.
Opening speech with a personal testimony and argument for a positive psychological approach to psychosis.
8.45 – 9.30 Dr Margreet de Pater – The loneliness in psychosis
Based on her extensive experience as a social psychiatrist Margreet de Pater emphasizes the need for a safe haven and the role family members can play in helping the person struggling with psychosis.
9.30 – 10.15 Phil Borges – Crazywise – Rethinking Madness
Phil Borges’ documentary Crazywise, which lent its name to this conference, explores the relevance of Shamanic traditional practices and beliefs to those of us living in the modern world.
10.30 – 11.15 Mario Domen – Common treatment of psychosis and alternatives
An overview of existing remedies for psychosis, with an emphasis on documented, non-medical treatment methods such as the Soteria and Open Dialogue method.
11.15 – 12.00 Sean Blackwell – Bipolar or Waking Up?
Sean Blackwell will explore the relationship between bipolar disorder and spiritual crisis, also known as “Spiritual Emergencies”. His conclusion is that not only are these two experiences deeply related, but that the healing potential for bipolar disorder has been greatly underestimated.

Frits Milders has worked in domains of acute psychiatry, clinical psychotherapy and psychiatry of the elderly. He was (a.o) head of psychiatry training in GGZ Groningen and chairman of the scientific committee of the Dutch Psychiatric Association.
